Charles Town City Hall

Charles Town, West Virginia is often known for the Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races, but there is also a vibrant downtown that deserves its moment in the spotlight. Downtown Charles Town pulses with artistic energy, local flavor, and a rich sense of history, perfectly capturing our ‘Historically Hip’ spirit.

As a local photographer, I’ve spent years exploring these streets with my camera in hand, drawn to the Hallmark vibes of the photo ready streets. This town is full of surprises, subtle, soulful, and worth savoring. Let me take you on a stroll.

Corner of George & Washington Streets with the courthouse in the background

Step back in time in Charles Town, West Virginia, where history lives in every corner. Founded in 1786 by Charles Washington, George Washington’s youngest brother, this charming town was carefully planned and generously shaped by its namesake. At the heart of Charles Town stands the Jefferson County Courthouse, where abolitionist John Brown was famously tried for treason in 1859, just before the Civil War. A short walk away, the Jefferson County Museum brings the town’s story to life with exhibits featuring everything from Civil War artifacts to personal letters written by the Washington family, making it a meaningful stop for any history lover.

Firehouse Gallery, Jefferson Arts Council, and Visitor Center, all located inside the C. Broadway Rouss Hall building

Charles Town also nurtures creativity, past and present. The Firehouse Gallery, located in a converted 19th-century fire station, once housed the town’s fire trucks and even a rescue boat. Today, it serves a much different purpose, offering a vibrant space for local and regional artists to display their work. The building is also home to the Jefferson Arts Council, a nonprofit dedicated to promoting the arts through cultural partnerships that enrich community life. Inside, you’ll also find one of Jefferson County’s three official Visitor Centers, welcoming travelers and helping them discover all the area has to offer.

Old Opera House

Just down the street, the Old Opera House continues to shine more than a century after it opened its doors in 1911. Originally built to host vaudeville and silent films, it now stages plays, concerts, and community events, preserving its rich legacy as a cultural cornerstone of downtown Charles Town.
